Significant Spoiler Warning
Don’t even spin that mouse wheel…
This page contains deep backstory lore about Ukatan’s true nature and ancient cosmology-level events in 🟩 RSR - Bloodtiger / rev2.5-era foundations.
Ukatan is introduced as a Systems Alliance actor in the present-day conflict, but the deeper canon frames Ukatan as something far older: one of the surviving “elder Templar Dragons,” an original class of shapeshifting cosmic beings whose existence predates modern empires by an incomprehensible margin.
At a glance
- Full name: Maolong Ukatan
- Core motif: an ancient observer/manipulator who treats civilizations as experiments—watching how each one lives, rises, and collapses, then using that knowledge for enrichment.
- Moral axis: broadly neutral; helps when it benefits him (or entertains him).
- Tribal alignment: effectively tribeless—a loner not meaningfully tied to any tribal feud.
- Faith: a devout follower of Varuna.
- Affiliations: Via Nox Cabal, Systems Alliance intelligence apparatus (cover), and a quiet alignment with Sun Jin Kaisara’s interests.
Overview
Ukatan is a name that initially reads like rank and command - an officer who can issue orders, direct covert work, and operate with the Systems Alliance’s institutional weight behind him. That surface identity is real enough to function in the present timeline, but it is not the whole truth. In the long lens of the setting, Ukatan belongs to a category that sits outside ordinary species and ordinary history, he’s a grand elder Templar Dragon.
Ukatan has watched empires rise, calcify, and collapse; has seen civilizations bloom into golden ages and then rot into dust. Where most characters treat history as a story, Ukatan treats it as a repeating experiment, an endless sequence of cultures to observe, study, and ponder what could have gone differently. He is fascinated with how each civilization lives: what it builds, what it worships, what it fears, and what it will sacrifice.
That detachment clarifies Ukatan’s morality. Ukatan reads as broadly neutral on the axis of good and evil, rarely moved by suffering on its own, but willing to help when the outcome is useful, amusing, or strategically profitable. At this scale of time, individual lives and even individual governments don’t land with the emotional weight they do for mortals; what interests Ukatan is the shape of civilizations and the leverage points that make them bend.
In the same spirit, Ukatan treats the modern political “career” as entertainment. The performance of rising through Systems Alliance ranks, of playing a believable officer while quietly serving Kaisara’s interests, functions as a long con Ukatan genuinely enjoys. Ukatan’s favorite game is manipulation: steering galactic powers by feeding truth, half-truth, and crafted lies into the right channels, and watching entire societies react like pieces on a board.
True Nature (Templar Dragon)
The canon premise for Templar Dragons is simple and unsettling. They are not “dragons” in the folkloric sense, but ancient entities - durable, cosmic, and close enough to the origin layer of the universe that they feel like leftover architecture from creation itself.
Schemes, leverage, and the “Amber Krowe” endgame
This connects directly to Ukatan’s role in Via Nox Cabal. Ukatan operates as an informant and misinformation master, an intelligence broker who can poison narratives as easily as he can clarify them.
In exchange, Ukatan’s “post-war” ask is not ideology, but property and position: the right to become Amber Krowe’s major domo/caretaker once the war concludes, up to and including an engineered “legitimate” rise (a manufactured presidency or similar figurehead role) that places Ukatan in control without ever looking like conquest.
The Systems Alliance cover (modern era, 0032–0038)
Ukatan’s “cover” story is not a disguise in the simple sense. It is a full institutional track. In the early Sun Jin foundation era (circa 0032), Ukatan emerges in Systems Alliance circles as an up-and-coming Silver Krowen (a feline-leaning Amber Krowen hybrid) military intelligence prodigy: sharp, charismatic, and seemingly built for threat analysis and tactical forecasting. The public-facing arc is the kind of career that looks inevitable in hindsight - fast promotions, selective assignments, and a reputation for being the person who can read the outer rim before anyone else.
That speed creates its own shadow story: the version where colleagues notice how quickly Ukatan’s rivals vanish from the promotion ladder, how often “unrelated” scandals break at exactly the right time, and how people who ask too many questions are reassigned, discredited, or simply removed from the record after an “unfortunate accident.” The Systems Alliance is bureaucratic enough that investigations can exist without consequence; Ukatan is careful enough that suspicion never hardens into proof.
Around this same 0032 window, Ukatan is visited by Skithix, who frames one of the Systems Alliance’s Shrike operatives, Forza Ninetails as “important to the galactic order of things” - a piece in long-range plans associated with Jethro. The warning lands because Ukatan isn’t coming into the Forza situation blind: Ukatan knows that Sun Jin Kaisara mentored Forza, that the two worked together within Shrike, and that Forza was present at the end of Encounter at Tisiphone Tower when Tanuki died. Whether Ukatan believes Skithix, already knows more than he admits, or simply recognizes an opportunity, the combination helps explain why Forza becomes a managed variable rather than a normal soldier in Ukatan’s later decisions. What Ukatan doesn’t fully grasp (at least early on) is how singularly important Forza is to Kaisara on a personal level.
That rise becomes strategically important once Sun Jin Kaisara’s rebellion begins to cohere. Ukatan’s specialty is outer rim threat intelligence, which puts him in the exact place where the Systems Alliance decides what is “real,” what is “noise,” and what deserves a fleet response. In practice, Ukatan uses that position to assure the Alliance that Kaisara’s faction is not a serious problem, either by minimizing the threat honestly, by manipulating interpretation, or by straight sabotage of the information flow.
By 0036, Ukatan’s ascent becomes formal power: Director for Defense Intelligence. At that point the pattern hardens into policy. Reports of the Sun Jin Empire’s escalation, claims of impossible battlefield effects, “space lasers,” and vicious soldiers who seem bulletproof while wielding glowing weapons, can be framed as exaggeration, misinformation, or panic. Under Ukatan’s leadership, the default posture is dismissal: the empire is a joke that will be crushed quickly, not a strategic rupture that demands immediate total war.
In 0038, as Kaisara prepares the fleet march toward Amber Krowe, she coordinates with Ukatan directly and gives a specific priority order: get Forza Ninetails off Amber Krowe “for his safety,” and bring him to Bethany. Ukatan agrees in words, but the actions that follow suggest the agreement is not aligned with the intent.
In November 0038, Ukatan, now overseeing Shrike in his intelligence role, sends Forza on a recon mission in an active Systems Alliance war theater. Forza is ambushed by Skithix, subdued, tortured, and captured, beginning the chain that ends with Forza’s placement at RD10-003. When reporting back to Kaisara, Ukatan lies: he claims he deployed Skithix to retrieve Forza and that Forza was killed in the field.
Deep History: The Tanuki-Jethro conflict, Flarion and Kaisara
In the earliest myth layer, Bezekira, Tanuki, and Ukatan read like ancient demigods - protectors who shape the survival of the galaxy by simply existing and intervening when something cosmic goes wrong.
Over time, Tanuki settles on Amber Krowe, a world with little meaningful life at the time. There, Tanuki discovers Red Matter and becomes its protector, treating it less like “power” and more like a sealed hazard that must never be mishandled.
Somewhere in that same shadowed era, Flarion is described as “born of the Red Matter” (details intentionally obscured). In the period that follows, Flarion is recognized as a “Child of Varuna”, functional Templar demigod, respected enough to move through high-level spaces without being treated as an immediate threat.
Then the catastrophe arrives: Jethro emerges from the Red Matter, and Tanuki becomes the first true host. Under the parasite’s influence, Tanuki goes on a warpath, an event that reframes “tribal conflict” into a containment crisis. Ukatan is physically present for the response effort, alongside Bezi and Flarion, when they confront Tanuki-Jethro.
The outcome is the hinge point of this entire myth arc: Jethro abandons Tanuki and takes over Flarion. Flarion’s stability fractures - enough to be dangerous, but without the manpower to wage a true cosmic war at full scale (an echo that later shows up in the Nightfall Templar framing).
Eventually, Flarion meets Majora, and her stabilizing influence suppresses Jethro to a dormant state. Flarion becomes calmer, functional enough that the parasite can be treated as “contained,” even if never cured.
Only after that does Tanuki have a daughter: Sun Jin Kaisara. Flarion kidnaps the child for two overlapping reasons: first, the Red Matter itself is a ticking cosmological fount of endless energy, and Kaisara is safer away from the center of that hazard; second, Jethro, still present inside Flarion, merely suppressed, plants (or amplifies) the conviction that Kaisara must be protected at all costs because of her future lineage (with the “why” kept hidden from the reader for now).
Ukatan helps raise Kaisara on Magnum. Ukatan’s willingness to do so is colored by an old friendship with Tanuki: even if Ukatan doesn’t agree with the kidnapping, Kaisara feels like a piece of Tanuki’s legacy that can’t be abandoned. Ukatan trusts that Majora’s presence has genuinely contained Jethro inside Flarion, and, at least for a time, stops treating the parasite as an immediate threat.
This bond between Kaisara and Ukatan, formed in Kaisara’s childhood, is why Kaisara trusts him enough to bring him into the fold of the Via Nox Cabal. It also gives Kaisara confidence that Ukatan would “enjoy” manipulating the Amber Krowen military.
Prequel-bait? threat (future hook?)
A timeline note points to a later-revealed, or earlier-in-time, cosmic crisis: a massive threat (not specified at this point) in which Bezi, Tanuki, and Ukatan “make names for themselves.” The galaxy is described as massively damaged, with nearly all life dying, but the threat is defeated. I call this prequel bait because it is less about immediate plot resolution and more about setting up a future deep-time arc in which these beings step into the foreground and their true scale becomes undeniable.
