The Sun Jin Empire is the interstellar state founded by Sun Jin Kaisara from a coalition of exploited outer-rim worlds in open rebellion against the Systems Alliance. It spans the outer-rim territories of roughly one half of the galaxy, counts some ±1 trillion citizens across many species.
The Empire has no appetite for conquering worlds. What unifies it is a shared hatred and understanding of the corruption of the Systems Alliance, and a resolve to topple that government for the good of the galaxy. Sun Jin is careful to draw the distinction: the fault is not Amber Krowe's, nor its people's. The Alliance is not one people but a sprawling network that merely happens to be headquartered on Amber Krowe — even if most of its ruling leadership are Krowen.
Overview
The Sun Jin Empire began not as a nation but as a promise — a way for scattered, mistreated outer-rim worlds to stand against a power none of them could challenge alone. Under Sun Jin Kaisara, that coalition of "weaker powers" hardened into a declared state following the Liberation of Bethany, and eventually into a galactic-scale empire that turned the Systems Alliance from an unchallenged hegemon into an embattled regime.
What distinguishes Sun Jin from the Alliance it opposes is its posture toward its own members. Where the Alliance rules its outer systems through garrisons, surveillance, and coerced dependency, Sun Jin largely lets its worlds keep their own governments and manage their own affairs — a model rooted in Kaisara's founding promises rather than in conquest.

Emblem & iconography
The Empire's emblem is a bird holding a red orb — in truth, a depiction of Varuna cradling the Red Sun. The symbol appears everywhere across Sun Jin banners, uniforms, and official iconography, yet very few truly understand what it depicts. It is a quietly Templar-leaning motif, and because its real meaning is bound up with the hidden Nightfall connection at the Empire's core, a more palatable cover story is spun in its place — leaving most citizens to recognize the emblem without ever knowing what it actually represents.
Origins: a rebellion born of revenge
The Empire's true origin is personal. Kaisara built the rebellion secretly as an act of revenge for the death of her father, Tanuki, who was killed on Amber Krowe by the Systems Alliance's orbital particle weapon, Longinus. That strike — authorized to kill Tanuki and carried out against a civilian population — became the ignition point of Kaisara's war.
Before the first shot of the liberation, Kaisara personally assassinated the head of the Systems Alliance Intelligence Services, the official who had ordered the Longinus strike. Beyond vengeance, the killing crippled the Alliance's ability to coordinate its intelligence-driven defense, leaving its response fractured as the rebellion began.
Kaisara understood that open, sustained war against the Alliance was impossible by conventional means. As a former Alliance assassin herself, she knew their strength firsthand — so she chose to fight from both inside and outside at once, giving a fragmented outer-rim resentment a direction and a leader.
The Liberation of Bethany
The Liberation of Bethany (0032) was the Empire's founding offensive — the moment a set of scattered grievances became a coordinated war. Bethany was an ideal first target: an outer-rim world far from the Alliance's true center of power, where its grip was "more claim than reality."
None of the rebelling worlds could face the Alliance alone. Their strength came from coordination — individually weaker militaries striking together against Alliance strongholds embedded in major cities, overwhelming garrisons never built to hold against a unified push. Driving the Alliance off Bethany entirely proved the impossible was possible and transformed a coalition of grievances into a credible movement.
With Bethany secured, its orbit became a staging ground for nearly the entire outer-rim fleet — a consolidation point that stayed and grew for over a decade. It is roughly here that Kaisara declared the rebellion into its own official government body: the Sun Jin Empire, unifying the outer rim on this side of the galaxy under a single banner, with Bethany as its capital world.
Territory & reach
The Empire's territory covers the outer-rim areas of one half of the galaxy — the systems most distant from the Alliance's core, and those most exploited by it. What began as a defensive coalition of neighboring worlds expanded, over the roughly two-year war and the years that followed, into a galactic-scale power counting around a trillion citizens.
Government & philosophy: self-rule under one banner
The defining feature of the Sun Jin Empire is how lightly it rules. Once the Empire formed after the Liberation of Bethany, Kaisara for the most part let member systems manage themselves and keep their own governments. Rather than replacing one occupier with another, she positioned the Empire as a protector and unifier, not a direct ruler.
This was most clearly expressed in her promise to Bethany: once the Systems Alliance was pushed off the planet, Bethany would be allowed to rebuild and run its own planetary government. She held true to that promise for member worlds across the Empire. Even as Bethany became the government headquarters of Sun Jin, it retained its own independent planetary government rather than being ruled directly — a distinction the Empire is careful to preserve.
That light touch does not make Sun Jin any less of an empire. Its worlds unmistakably recognize themselves as part of an empire, and real power still radiates from the central organization at its heart: while everyday governance stays local, the Empire sets the shared direction, commands the fleet, and binds the coalition together under one banner.
Capital & headquarters: Bethany and the Esther
Bethany served as the Empire's capital and Imperial headquarters from its founding. Crucially, the Imperial HQ on Bethany was not the same thing as Bethany's own planetary government — the Empire's central seat and the world's self-rule coexisted on the same planet.
That arrangement changed with the completion of the colossal starship Esther. Once finished, the Esther became the Empire's true mobile headquarters, and Kaisara ruled mostly from aboard it. Bethany remained the location of many government functions and its own planetary government, but the Empire's center of command traveled with the Esther — a mobile capital capable of moving across the galaxy as the war demanded.
The Via Nox Cabal: hidden leadership
Behind the Empire's public face sits the Via Nox Cabal — a secret council that is, in truth, the real leadership of the Sun Jin Empire. It binds Kaisara's rebellion to the covert supernatural power of the Nightfall Templar.
The bargain that founded it was straightforward: the Nightfall Templar would send covert warriors to aid Sun Jin's battles, while the Empire supplied the food and resources needed for Magnum's survival. Kaisara represents the Empire within the Cabal; Atomis Silverwolf represents the Nightfall Templar.
The Cabal is why Sun Jin's "impossible victories" hold together: outnumbered fleets and foot soldiers backed quietly by Templar magic, unmatched warriors, and specialized Templar technology the Alliance never accounted for.
Technology: the Empire's "impossible" edge
Over its rapid decade of growth, Sun Jin somehow fielded technology far beyond what a young outer-rim power should possess — most strikingly, laser weaponry long believed too difficult to miniaturize down to starship scale. To Alliance analysts, reports of Sun Jin "space lasers" read as exaggeration or outright panic; in reality, the capability was genuine. This next-level technology came in secret from the Nightfall Templar, funneled to the Empire through the Via Nox Cabal.
So far it is only ever really seen operationally aboard the Esther — whether because the weapon system is uniquely mounted there, or because the ship itself was purpose-built around the new technology required to support such a system.
Intelligence & spies within the Systems Alliance
The Empire's war is not fought on the battlefield alone. Sun Jin maintains covert operatives embedded deep within the Systems Alliance, including within its intelligence apparatus. These hidden assets feed the Empire information, shape what the Alliance believes is "real" versus "noise," and keep the Alliance reacting late to Sun Jin's escalation. Their existence is one of the Empire's most closely guarded advantages — names that, as Kaisara puts it, cannot be spoken safely.
These agents are a big reason the Empire was able to unite and grow with so little interference from the Alliance. Working for Kaisara from inside the SA, they carefully shaped what the Alliance believed:
- That the rebellion was far weaker than it really was.
- That the Empire's advanced technology was nothing more than rumor.
- That other rebellions were higher priority — when they were not.
- That the loss of Bethany was a temporary setback that would be recovered soon enough.
- That this small, far-flung rebellion was too far out of the way to be worth a serious response.
- That committing to an outright war would only lend credibility to the idea that a faction capable of rivaling the SA existed at all — an appearance the Alliance was steered into avoiding.
By the time the Alliance grasped the true scale of the threat, the Empire had already united the outer rim and grown into a galactic-scale power.
Key worlds
- Bethany — the capital and government headquarters; a green-threaded megacity world of ~25 billion and homeworld of the Bethians.
- Caisteal — the closest habitable world to Bethany, in the same system; a "green-and-snow" farming colony and home of the Caistealian people. A major setting for later events in the war's fallout.
- Tier — a small, sparsely populated tropical forest-and-mountain world within Sun Jin territory.
The Bethians
The Bethian people are the capital-world majority and the demographic and institutional backbone of the Empire. Though Sun Jin is a multi-species coalition, Bethians are the most widespread across its core institutions — garrison forces, security, logistics, and administration. As the capital-world norm, Bethian culture shapes what the Empire treats as "normal": its iconography, uniforms, civic language, and command culture.
Notable figures
- Sun Jin Kaisara — Founder and supreme leader (Empress) of the Empire; a high-level Nightfall Templar (Redken) and co-head of the Via Nox Cabal. The rebellion, the liberation, and the Empire's governing philosophy all flow from her.
- Atomis Silverwolf — Master tactician and Nightfall Templar representative within the Via Nox Cabal; the Empire's link to Templar lore, technology, and covert force.
- Rio Narro — A special agent of the Empire, from the farming world of Caisteal; first joined the war during the Liberation of Bethany.
- Professor Denim — A Bethian tied to the Empire's weapons-research programs.
