Overview
Jandakot was a resource-rich planet ruled by the Jandakot Empire. By 0030, the world was dying: its power rested on dwindling mineral reserves, inherited industry, and the labor of those living in its deep warrens. Its rulers continued to project strength and independence even as foreign powers sought alternative resources and the empire’s strategic relevance diminished.
The Systems Alliance valued Jandakot primarily for its minerals and labor. It avoided destroying the planet’s industrial centers because doing so would also destroy the resources and infrastructure it intended to seize.
Environment
Jandakot’s inhabited regions were dominated by immense, aging industrial structures. Rust-stained pipes bled steam into enclosed halls, while oil, grime, and metallic residue coated machinery and walkways. The air carried stale oil and the taste of corroded metal. Illumination was shallow and artificial, reinforcing the impression of a civilization buried inside its own failing infrastructure.
Much of Jandakotian life extended into deep warrens beneath the surface. Fortresses, industrial halls, drainage systems, fighting pits, and crowded grandstands formed a harsh built environment in which habitation, extraction, and violence existed side by side.
Society and rule
The planet was governed by the Jandakot Empire, a fiercely territorial regime led by a king from a throne inside a decaying industrial castle. Authority appeared personal and inherited, supported by warriors, armed crowds, and displays of physical dominance rather than by a sophisticated planetary state.
Jandakotian society valued toughness, appetite, pride, and the possession of territory. Its rulers treated the empire’s ruins and resources as proof of enduring power, despite having inherited them from generations of laborers and ancestors. The deep warrens regarded the Systems Alliance as the “Soft Hands”—outsiders with clean boots and contracts who had never bled for what they owned.
Industry and resources
Mineral extraction was the foundation of Jandakot’s economy and political importance. By 0030, however, the planet’s resources were becoming less competitive as deposits were found elsewhere. The remaining industrial network was extensive but badly degraded, characterized by corroded machinery, oil-slick metal, sewers, drainage grates, and infrastructure maintained far beyond its intended life.
To the Systems Alliance, Jandakot represented three assets:
- Mineral resources
- An established extraction infrastructure
- A large pool of exploitable labor
Military capacity
Despite its aggressive posture, the Jandakot Empire possessed no meaningful interstellar fleet. Its space forces consisted of a meager planetary-defense patrol used primarily for trade enforcement. The empire’s practical defenses instead relied on fortified warrens, armed inhabitants, crude rifles and blades, and the belief that the value of its resources would discourage orbital attack.
That calculation made Jandakot difficult to destroy but vulnerable to infiltration, coercion, and regime change.
Fall to the Systems Alliance
On Sep 17, 30, two Shrike assassins entered the Jandakotian king’s stronghold. While the elder assassin confronted and distracted the ruler, her pupil descended from the rafters and killed him on his throne. The hall erupted into violence, and the fortress’s drainage system carried the aftermath into the sewers below.
Jandakot was won without a treaty, invasion fleet, or conventional army. By removing its ruler inside the seat of his power, the Systems Alliance broke the resistance of a world it wished to possess intact.
Appearance
Jandakot’s visual identity is one of imperial scale in terminal decay:
- Cavernous industrial halls and fortress-like warrens
- Corroded pipes venting steam
- Oil-slick metal grates and greasy machinery
- Dim, shallow overhead lighting
- Rust, soot, stale oil, and metallic residue
- Crude weapons beside aging industrial technology
- Monumental structures inherited from a more productive past
Canon appearance
Jandakot and its people appear in Illumination III - The Bore.
